Like any other security provider program, McAfee regularly implements the latest virus and malware definitions, software fixes, and performance improvements for its McAfee security products. As a McAfee Antivirus user, you should download and install these updates to keep them up to date to improve security and performance. For instructions on how to check for the latest updates, see this McAfee Antivirus Support Guide.
For most versions of McAfee with antivirus and security:
Find the M icon on the taskbar. Click the right button on the M button, select Updates and select Check Now. Depending on the version of your McAfee software, you can see “Check for Updates” by clicking the right button of the M button instead of “Updates” > “Check Now.” Click Check for updates to check for updates. You can also double-click the M icon to open the McAfee Security Center console. With the McAfee SecurityCenter console, you can see the security status and updates to your computer.
Click Updates: Current and you’ll see two options, namely. Check for updates and settings on the right. Click the link To check for updates, and the program will check for updates. If you want to work on your computer on other things, click “Run in the background” and the McAfee SecurityCenter will disappear. You can then click the M icon to open the console. When you’re done, you’ll see the message your programs have updated. Click “Ready” to exit the Updates section. If you have a request, restart your computer.
For McAfee VirusScan Enterprise:
Click the right button on the M icon and select Update now. McAfee checks for the latest software updates, virus descriptions, and performance fixes. When you’re done, you’ll see that all the updates have been successfully installed. Close the McAfee VirusScan console window. You can also turn to McAfee Antivirus support documentation to learn about upgrade options in the VirusScan console.
For more information:
You can also manually upgrade the McAfee program. The McAfee update file is called the DAT file. Open your web browser. The homepage should be downloaded immediately. Enter “download the DAT file for McAfee” (if you know your McAfee version, type that name, otherwise leave it as it is) to google or Bing and click Enter. Now you’ll see the results of downloading DAT files. Click one of the McAfee links and download the file. Save the file and close the browser window.
When you’re done, find the file and open it. When you see a request, click “Run.” Follow the rest of the instructions on the screen and complete the procedure. If you have a request, restart your computer. Your McAfee program has been updated with the latest updates and fixes.
You can also customize your McAfee program to download automatic updates. This means that McAfee automatically remembers downloading and installing the latest updates without your interference. Click the right button on the M button, select Updates, and select Tune It Now. Click to select “Set updates automatically” and notify me when the product will be updated (recommended). When you’re done, click OK to save and close the changes.
